Direct TV to WIFI Satellite Dish

I converted a DTV dish into a WIFI satelite dish. Showing it off in class. Sorry about all the Demo Crap every 10 seconds. Need software to convert FLV to AVI.

well…. it might work, but the arm where the LNB would have been is in totally the wrong position to pick up ground networks, it’s still angling the dish skywards.

  2. pickelsAREtasty says:

Yeah, it worked great on my room when I angled it down (not shown in the video).

    works great for me..

9miles if line of site. no buildings or trees in the way. The higher up the dish in the air, the farther it can receive signal.

I did the demonstration in the other video I made of this (in the video response)

hi there builder what is exacly you use to put inside tehweather proof thingy … is a router you putin there or what?
    … thanks

now i wana build one and i had the same exact modul you have that ur using for the router…but somthin went wrong with it…o well:)

You need a POE on that bitch!

I have downloaded some software from a European company for laptops, and cell phones which does the same thing. That would be great for urban use since the hotspots are there anyway.

what exactly is that for is it like u used a router to pick up wireless connections from neighbors or for like an Ex: u point the dish to across the street so u can have wireless for ur laptop. ?? if is what

  11. pickelsAREtasty says:

@XoXKyleXXX Exactly. I use mine as a bridge so it connects two networks together. But you can use it to steal/borrow (depending on how you look at it) wifi internet from blocks, or sometimes miles away. You can use it to connect to any open network, or network that you know a password to ;)

  12. pickelsAREtasty says:

@16GDSM Yeah I thought of doing that. Not the right voltage (12v) to this particular router though so I would have to custom make it.

  13. pickelsAREtasty says:

@freakshowboy9 Yah I use all WRT54G models..love them.. For home use i have the WRT54G-TM just because it has more memory available.

  14. pickelsAREtasty says:

@55jasquiriliver55 Yes I put the guts of a router in the weather proof box. Only one antenna is active and connects to the dish.

  15. XoXKyleXXX says:

@pickelsAREtasty thats cool but how u use the router as a wi fi receiver to pick up wireless connections? wouldnt it be easier if u get a regular wi fi usb or wi fi card? to pick up signals, probably a router if u no how to make it to get wifi signals its a lot better than a regular usb but the thing is i have no idea to make what u did xD =[

I belive linksys makes a POE(12v), they’re scattered around ebay, thought about picking up one, then i toyed around with making my own poe it would be more cost effective but i like buying stuff heh.

A router is the better alternative, the firmware is customizable, wifi cards/usb are inferior in my book, you can increase the mW on a router which increases the singal strength, its like a box of fun.

If you have a wrt54g google ddwrt and get yourself some firmware, a biquad antenna a long enough N male to RPTNC connector/cable and a dish.

the shorter the cable the better, mine is 18″ and its pretty short but get a POE and you can mount it anywhere without signal loss.

  18. pickelsAREtasty says:

    @16GDSM well said.

  19. XohshitztonysbackX says:

@pickelsAREtasty how much is the to get them to install it?

I’m using directv satellite tv right now

This isn’t something you can buy from directTV. It was a DIY project where I turned a TV dish into a Wifi dish (it can no longer receive TV signals). I got the dish for free from a friend and spent about $100 on parts (router, water proof conjunction box, biquad antenna)

I would like to make one do you have all the steps and parts to build it.

You can get older Directv antennas at a thrift store. I got a used one for $1.00!
